What to Know Before You Go to Switzerland

Wait, before you go anywhere, there are some important things you need to know. Take notes because we’re going to give you some tips that would make your holiday in Switzerland run smoothly.

1. Best time to visit

holiday in switzerland

If you’re already set your intention to go skiing, then it’s better to go during the months of December to March. Because, of course, winter sports are better to do in the winter.

But if you’re still unsure, you can opt to go in the spring, which is in April-June. The flowers are blooming, the weather is warm, and the snow is reduced to a bearable level.

Or, you can go during the fall, which is from September to October. The weather is mildly chilly and the grapes are being harvested so it’s also the best time for you to do a wine tasting.

To enjoy all of that, you need to find the best hotel with the most strategic placement. Like The Dolder Grand, for example, a 5-star hotel in the heart of Zürich.

This luxurious hotel features contemporary designed rooms, equipped with full amenities and a bathroom with a deep soaking bathtub. All rooms also come with a seating area and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the lovely city of Zürich.

Itinerary in Switzerland for 5 Days and 4 Nights Worth of Good Time!

Switzerland is filled with so many tourist attractions ranging from natural escapes to calming town tours. If you’re a first-timer, you might want to make a clear and detailed itinerary so you won’t get lost and your time will be spent efficiently.

Day 1: Arriving in Zürich and City Sightseeing

Zurich, switzerland

  • Departing to Zürich Airport
  • Hotel check-in
  • Free time at the hotel
  • Walk to Altstadt
  • Check out the Lindenhof Hill
  • Back to the hotel

As the largest city in Switzerland, Zürich is one of the most favorite areas for tourists to spend their holiday on. Not only that, there are plenty of transportation options that can take you to the other cities.

altstadt, switzerland

After spending hours on an airplane, you just feel tired, right? So why not take it slow for your first day in Switzerland? After some stretching and unpacking in the hotel, you can check Altstadt, or as people call it, Zürich’s Old Town!

Altstadt used to be the entire city of Zürich, hence the nickname. Everywhere you go, you’ll see pretty cafes, boutiques, and churches that are begging to be photographed.

Lindenhoff Hill, switzerland

Now, if you can squeeze a bit more energy, we recommend you to hike the Lindenhof Hill. Although it has “hill” in its name, Lindenhof Hill is actually an elevated park that’s located in the heart of Zürich.

This park is one of the most favorite tourist spots in Zürich as it will allow you to enjoy the views of the Limmat River and the whole city of Zürich. And, if you go there during the evening or nearing sunset, this can be a romantic place for you and bae to visit together.

Day 2: Explore Interlaken and Grindelwald

Harder kulm, switzerland

  • Visit the scenic Harder Kulm
  • Enjoy the calming Brienz Lake and Thun Lake
  • Head to Grindelwald from Interlaken
  • Hop on the Jungfraujoch train
  • Hike to Bachalpsee Lake
  • Back to the hotel

After having a good night’s rest, you’re now ready to explore Switzerland a little deeper. Sandwiched between two lakes in the center of Switzerland, visiting Interlaken can offer both thrilling yet relaxing journeys.

Interlaken is famous for its natural beauties. So you must visit Harder Kulm, a viewpoint up from the mountain where you can see the aerial view of Interlaken. To reach Harder Kulm, you only need to take a 10-minute funicular ride.

Brienz Lake, switzerland

Visiting Interlaken wouldn’t be complete without visiting the lakes that are squeezing the city. Those lakes are Brienz Lake and Thun Lake. Brienz Lake is famous for the glass-like turquoise water that can reflect the mountain in the morning.

In contrast, Thun Lake is where you go when you want to do water activities. Of course both lakes are just as stunning and, if you want to prove it, you can take a boat tour that will take you around both lakes.

Jungfraujoch, Switzerland

After that, you can visit the village of Grindelwald. This charming village retains effortless beauty that will instantly draw your attention. One of the experiences you can try is the day trip to Jungfraujoch which can be reached by train from Grindelwald.

Bachalpsee Lake, Switzerland

But, if you’re a hiker, you can opt for a hiking trip to Bachalpsee Lake. The trail passes the alpine meadows and the air is refreshing. Then, upon reaching the lake, you’ll be rewarded by the sight of a painting-like landscape of a lake surrounded by prairie and mountain that’s just out-of-this-world!

Day 3: Enjoy the Beauty of Zermatt

The Matterhorn, Switzerland

  • Take the train to Zermatt
  • Skiing at the Matterhorn
  • Discover the enchanting Gorner Gorge
  • Photo hunting in Zermatt Village
  • Back to the hotel

If there’s a winter sports junkie reading this article, you must be wondering when we will go skiing in this itinerary. Well, your wait is over because that’s exactly what we’re going to do on day 3!

The Matterhorn is the most well-known peak in Switzerland and it’s a paradise for people who love doing winter sports. To get here, first you must go to Zermatt, a village near the mountain.

Zermatt is a car-free town, so if you’re planning to drive yourself there, you must park your car in the designated parking area and take a 12-minute train ride. Or, for convenience, you can take a taxi or a train from Zürich. After that, you can hike, take a cable car, or, if you want to arrive with style, a scenic helicopter ride.

Gorner Gorge, Switzerland

Coming down from the mountain and back to Zermatt, you can walk for about 15 minutes to the bewitching Gorner Gorge.

Since the last ice age, the water from the glacial river has continuously sliced through the cliffs, thus creating a fabulous canyon with glistening water. Not far from it, you can find the Gorner Gorge park where you can chill in the meadow or play with the cute Swiss sheeps.

Zermatt Village, Switzerland

Before you get back to the hotel, don’t forget to spare some time to visit the Zermatt Village that has a long history of tourism. Even the oldest hotel in Zermatt is located right in this village!

Exploring the car-free lanes, you can sit around at the patio cafe, buy some souvenirs, or go photo hunting because literally every inch of this village is super instagrammable!

Day 4: Cycling in Furka Pass

Hotel Belvedere, Switzerland

  • Drive to Furka Pass
  • Enjoying the stunning scenery on the way over
  • Take a quick stop to take a pic in Hotel Belvédère
  • Explore the Devil Bridge
  • Lunch at a nearby restaurant
  • Back to the hotel

Ever watch the James Bond film Goldfinger? Then you must be familiar with the car chase scene, right? That exact scene was shot at Furka Pass!

Furka Pass is a mountain pass situated in south-central Switzerland and is considered to be one of the prettiest in the country. People usually come here by car, and they would park it near Hotel Belvédère. Even though this iconic hotel is already closed, people still stop by to take cool pics of it.

Quite often, people also come here with their bicycles. After ditching their ride, they would cycle through the pass to enjoy the refreshing atmosphere and landscape.

Although the pass is stretched for around 35 kilometers. Tourists have often seen cycling due to the stunning realm surrounding it.

The Devil's Bridge, Switzerland

After some time, when you’re closing into the canton of Uri, you’ll find the legendary Teufelsbrücke. Or, as what the locals call it, The Devil’s Bridge. Legend has it, the villagers were so desperate to have a bridge, they even made a deal with the devil!

Before heading back to the hotel, you can stop by at nearby restaurants and have lunch. Imagine how awesome it would be to have a bite with the scenic view of the pass?

Day 5: Last Day in Switzerland

  • Buy souvenirs in Bahnhofstrasse
  • Hotel check-out
  • Fly back home

So we finally reached the end of our holiday in Switzerland. To catch our flight in Zürich Airport, it would be wise if you spend your last day in the city. Like, visiting the world’s most expensive shopping street maybe?

Bahnhofstrasse, switzerland

Yes, Zürich is home to the most exclusive shopping avenue in the world called Bahnhofstrasse. Along the main streets, you can easily find some of the major fashion houses opening their stores.

Swiss Chocolates

But, this is making Bahnhofstrasse even more perfect for your last-day destination. Because you’re going back home anyway, you can spend the rest of your money here without any worries!

Buy some souvenirs, taste their expensive chocolates, and spend some time at one of their luxurious cafes. If not here, where and when else can you do this?
