Christmas in London – It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in London! As the temperature drops, the city transformed into an amazing winter wonderland — glittering with colorful lights, decorated Christmas trees, winter pop-ups, and Christmas markets around every corner.

Christmas in London: Recommended Activities & Places

Before going, check out and read these essential tips for those of you who are first-timers in London. Make sure to prepare everything beforehand. 😉

  • Prepare your passport, visa (if needed), and some pounds for your cash. Don’t also forget to check the entry requirements to the UK if you’re coming from another country. Click here to keep updated with the latest regulations.
  • The temperature might be dropped so it would be really cold at night when you stroll around. Pack warm clothes for your winter trip and bring an umbrella too (it may be necessary later).
  • London has a good transportation system. You can take public transportation to commute around so you can save up on your money.
  • Don’t forget to visit the free attractions or join free city tours!
  • Yes, London is expensive. Therefore it’s better to book accommodation in advance. Choose hostels or 3-star hotels for a more affordable choice. For food and drinks, expect to pay at least £4 for a pint of beer and £7+ for a lunch at a café.

1. Have Fun at Hyde Park Winter Wonderland

When December comes around, the famous Hyde Park embraces the Christmas spirit, presenting Winter Wonderland with Christmas decorations and songs wafting through the air. You can see a lot of festive entertainment and activities, such as ice skating, a circus show, live music, and of course its Christmas market.

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland is happening from 19 November 2021 to 3 January 2022. While it’s free during off-peak, you have to pay for tickets during peak times and some activities also require additional tickets, for instance, rides, games, circus shows, and workshops.

However, we guarantee it’d totally be a fun experience! It’s also suitable for those of you who bring kids along with you. If you feel hungry, Winter Wonderland offers many restaurants, bars, and food stalls for tasty food, wine, or hot chocolate to warm you up!

2. Visit Christmas Markets Around the City

Leicester Square Christmas Market

Leicester Square which is located at the heart of London also boasts a festive look during Christmas. Starting on 12 November 2021, the square transformed into a Christmas market where you can find stalls selling seasonal treats, food, and drinks.

Aside from that, you can also go to Spiegeltent to watch variety shows, cabarets, or girl bands while enjoying the sparkling lights that fully decorated the whole market. This Christmas market lasts until 3 January 2022, don’t miss it!

Greenwich Market

Greenwich Market is where you have to go to find antique goods, fashion items, jewelry, and even scrumptious bites! Boasting around 120 stalls, this market is also hyped for Christmas festivity, decorated with twinkling lights and Christmas market-themed ornaments.

Southbank Center Winter Market

Walk by the bank river then you’ll find Southbank Center Winter market. Situated just a stone’s throw away from the London Eye, you can come to this Christmas market filled up with street vendors selling various menus, festive goodies, and also many Christmas gifts and crafts.

What’s even more interesting is that you can enjoy the enchanting view of London and the River Thames from the winter pop-up igloos while eating waffles, mac and cheese, fondue, bratwurst, pies, pancakes, burgers, and many more. There are also the ‘Winter Light’ illuminations that color up the Southbank Center!

3. Enjoy London’s Outdoor Ice Rink at Natural History Museum

Winter means that it’s time for you to glide around picturesque outdoor ice rinks! One spot that you shouldn’t miss when you’re in London is the Natural Museum History Ice Rink, where you can experience the thrill of skating with the backdrop of the Waterhouse building and surrounded by sparkling lights during the magical winter.

Not only skating, but you can also enjoy carousel rides and buy some food to satisfy your tummy. However, after being there for 16 years, this year is gonna be the final year of the Natural History Museum Ice Rink. It will be then transformed into a hub for urban wildlife as a part of a national campaign to help nature. Make sure to pay a visit one last time. 😉

See how the popular Oxford Street unveils Christmas vibes by lighting up the whole street! However, this year, it gets even more festive because 20 streets across the West End, including Regent Street, Bond Street, and areas in Mayfair and Piccadilly also lit up the sky using more than a million LEDs.

You can stroll around Oxford Street and surrounding areas while enjoying the Christmas lights, shopping, or simply just taking pictures. It gives you a magical looking in the night sky.
