Cities You Must Explore During Winter

Traveling to Europe isn’t necessary to experience snow. If you’re planning a trip to Japan, the best time to go is between the months of December and February, when the country’s magnificent winter weather is at its peak. Here are some cities that can serve as pointers for you, t-mates. Psst, there is an amazing village too, you know!

1. Kamakura

Kamakura appears like a good option if you’re looking for a special destination to spend the winter in Japan. Kamakura is known for its serenity and beauty, but it also houses the Kamakura Daibutsu, the tallest Buddha statue in Japan at 11.3m in height and 121 tons in weight, at its Ktoku-in temple. How magnificent is it, t-mates?

2. Kyoto

Similar to Kamakura, Kyoto is home to a plethora of fascinating temples that, when dusted in snow, look even more enchanting than they already do. Kinkakuji, a major tourist spot in Kyoto, transforms into a winter wonderland. In the winter, Kinkakuji’s characteristic gold color stands out even more against the white snow. 3. Aomori

Aomori is known for having one of the coldest winters in Japan due to the large amount of snowfall it receives. While at Aomori, t-mates can warm yourself in front of the firebox aboard the Tsugaru Stove Train, which has been running along its 20.7-kilometer track since the 1930s. What an amazing experience ya, t-mates!

The firebox of the Tsugaru Stove Train is multipurpose and is frequently used to bake surume in addition to providing heat. Climb the Hakkoda Mountains via cable car and then hike around Lake Juniko to take in the stunning scenery. Those of you who want a good thrill won’t want to miss the Hirosaki Castle Yuki-Doro Festival, which will be brightened by the beautiful lanterns created by local residents. 4. Sapporo

If you’re ever in Japan during the first week of February, you just must attend the Sapporo Snow Festival. T-mates should visit the Odori Site (a 1.5km long park packed with spectacular ice sculptures and snow dolls), the Tsudome Site (a super spacious ride for playing in the snow that is divided into indoor and outdoor regions), and the Susukino Site if they go to the Sapporo Snow Festival (center of ice sculpture shows and Ice Sculpture Contest).

Before the Sapporo Snow Festival begins, t-mates can hike up Mount Moiwa, explore the Willy Wonka-esque Shiroi Koibito Park, and relax on the serene waters of Lake Shikotsu. It surely will be an interesting experience for you, t-mates!

5. Yamagata (Ginzan Onsen)

Yamagata, Japan is included so that you may enjoy the onsen there. One of the most popular wintertime pastimes because it provides physical comfort and warmth to the tourists. Taking a dip in a natural hot spring is a popular method for Japanese people to unwind and take in the sights. So, don’t forget to give it a try, t-mates!

Ginzan, located in Yamagata, is known for having some of the best onsen in all of Japan during the winter. In addition, Ginzan city has retained a sense of its historic character. Snow blankets the wooden homes and structures, and the scene is made all the more dramatic by the lamplight. To be honest, it’s like being a part of a fantastical story.

6. Shirakawa

On addition to the stunning scenery, Shirakawa is also home to its own unique allure, which is largely concentrated in the picturesque Ogimachi Village. Shirakawa is a unique travel destination since it lies at the base of Mount Haku, one of Japan’s most well-known peaks and one of the Three Holy Mountains, along with Mount Fuji and Mount Tate.

The village’s 114 gasshō-zukuri (Japanese-style dwellings) seem especially picturesque under a blanket of fresh snow. Some homes have been renovated to serve as hotels, museums, or restaurants. Shirakawago-hirase-onsen is the most well-liked onsen in the area and is a great choice if you’re in need of a relaxing bath to recover from a long day or to chase away the chill of winter.

Shirakawa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its natural beauty and the rare gassho-zukuri found there. Japan is not only home to stunning metropolises, but also to some really hip rural communities.

7. Nagano

The Yamanouchi area, close to Nagano Prefecture, is home to the famed red-faced wild snow monkeys, and the area around Jigokudani Monkey Park is where they go to soak in the hot spring. Hundreds of monkeys with bright red faces can be seen here relaxing in a hot spring. That is so hilarious, t-mates! It would be a shame to visit Nagano Prefecture and miss out on this one-of-a-kind event.

8. Hakodate, Hokkaido

If you’re looking for a unique winter getaway, Hakodate in Hokkaido, Japan, is definitely worth checking out! This charming port city in the northern part of Hokkaido has its own special charm that t-mates just have to experience.

Make sure to hop on the Hakodate Ropeway, the cable car that takes you up Mount Hakodate, where you can soak in the breathtaking view of the city from above. The scenery gets even more magical with a dusting of winter snow, making it look like a scene straight out of a postcard!

And when it comes to food, t-mates absolutely have to try Hakodate’s famous King Crab. It’s a local specialty that’s guaranteed to make your taste buds dance with joy! ?

9. Kanazawa, Ishikawa

Fun fact! The name “Kanazawa” literally translates to “golden marsh,” which makes sense since this city is known as Japan’s top producer of gold leaf crafts. Yep, those shiny gold flakes you see on food and decorations? It is crafted from here!

Kanazawa is also famous for its stunning gardens. One of it that t-mates absolutely can’t miss is Kenrokuen Garden. In winter, the garden gets blanketed in snow, transforming it into a living painting. It’s unbelievably beautiful!

10. Yuzawa, Niigata

What’s a winter trip to Japan without trying some exciting winter sports like skiing, right? Well, if you’re up for some snowy adventures, Yuzawa in Niigata Prefecture is the perfect spot for you~
