1. Bamboo Forest

For the locals, the forest is a local custom that is part of their culture. However, for those who didn’t know, the forest used to be nothing but a land full of bamboo. As more people are visiting the village, tourists start to realize the beauty of the 45-hectare forest.

The dim-lit atmosphere of the forest adds a mysterious yet romantic vibe to it. No wonder a lot of tourists come here for a photoshoot either with their loved ones or for a natural photo collection. Other than that, the forest is also a rainwater catchment area for the village. Therefore, the bamboo forest is also called the Village Protector.

Bamboo is one of Penglipuran’s heritage. For this reason, the villagers take care of the forest seriously. As a heritage, it is compulsory for each house to have bamboo as its main material and the bamboo must come from the forest.

2. Karang Memadu

Memadu in Indonesian means to practice polygamy. With a culture that highly respects women, it is strictly prohibited for a man to marry more than one woman. Men who are rebellious enough to violate this rule are getting social sanctions and not allowed to live along with other villagers.

Karang Memadu, located in the north of locals’ houses, is the place of exile for such men. The social sanctions are a handful, those who marry 2 or more women will lose their permit to enter any temple of the village, enter the northern area of the village, and be involved in custom ceremonies.

The land of Karang Memadu is 921-meter square and is separated from the village area by a large wall. To reach this area, people should go to the road which is narrow and dirty. One of the villagers even claims that they see the land of Karang Memadu as filthy, therefore nobody should take any crop yields from there.

3. The Customs of Penglipuran

The villagers of Penglipuran Village are strongly in touch with their culture. They even still perform rituals in their religious ceremony. Some of them are Nyaeb ritual, Mamungkah, and Nangkluk Merana.

The second ritual is Mamungkah, a ceremony as the farmers begin plowing their land. One cow is given for Sakti Kentel Bumi Queen as the offering.

Third is Nangkluk Merana. This ceremony is performed as an attempt to control pesticides and a wish for the villagers and the plants’ safety considering the changing climate.

5. Tibumana Waterfalls

40-minute away from Ubud is the calming and quiet waterfall of Tibumana. Walking into its area will make you feel like entering a whole new world. All you hear is the sound of rushing water that gets louder with each step you take as you make your way down to the forest surrounding the waterfall.

The water cascades from a green forest and drops beautifully to its natural pool and continues its journey to the Bali sea. If you visit the fall in summer, the natural pool is likely in its best condition. That means you can peacefully swim in its clear, greenish-blue water.
