Mosques in Lombok – What comes to your mind when you hear the word “Lombok”? The common answers must be about its pristine beaches, its waterfalls and how exotic the island is, right?

Well, t-mates, the truth is Lombok is more than that. Some of you might have heard people referring Lombok as “The Island of a Thousand Mosques.”

In fact, there are more than just a thousand mosques in Lombok. This island is home to more than 4,000 thousand mosques that are spread through 598 villages. If you are interested enough, sometimes religious tourism can be spiritually healing too.

Exploring the Religious Side of Lombok Island

Let’s uncover the other side of Lombok, t-mates. These enchanting mosques in Lombok with their grand architecture are waiting for you to discover. Perhaps, this can give you some ideas of where to visit for your next trip.

1. The Start of it All: Bayan Beleq Mosque

Located 80 kilometers away from the heart of Mataram — in Bayan Village — Bayan Beleq is the oldest mosque in Lombok, recorded in history. Syeh Gaus Abdul Razak, one of Islam missionaries in Bayan during the 16th century was the one who built Bayan Beleq.

Every part of Bayan Beleq Mosque is intentionally left unattended and unrenovated. The locals themselves wanted to make Bayan Beleq as it was originally built, as evidence of historical heritage in Lombok.

Though the mosque looks old it is, in fact, a sturdy one, and is still used as a place of worship by the villagers. Today, Bayan Beleq has also become the most wanted tourist attraction for locals and foreigners alike.

Address: Belek, Karang Bajo, Bayan, North Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara (Check on Google Maps)

2. Hubbul Wathan, a Spiritual Journey Through Artistic Architecture

In the Lombok Islamic Center complex, Hubbul Wathan mosque was beautifully designed inside and out. The combination of the soft pastel yellow with its pastel green domes make Hubbul Wathan stand out prominently in the heart of Mataram.

There’s nothing but awe as soon as you have the chance to look at its grandness. Looking already stunning during the day, the beauty of Hubbul Wathan even looks even more splendid at night with the light showering it.

If you have some more time in Lombok, a visit to Hubbul Wathan might be a consideration. The interior of the mosque is also stunningly decorated with Asmaul Husna or the 99 Names of Allah on the walls.

Address: Pringgarata, Central Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara 83562 (Check on Google Maps)

3. The Enchanting Nurul Bilad Mosque

Now, moving on to the part of Central Lombok, Mandalika, Nurul Bilad Mosque is titled as the biggest mosque in Lombok after the majestic Hubbul Wathan Mosque. The two storeys mosque was built in a total area of approximately 7,200 m2 and is estimated to accommodate 1,500 people.

Since Mandalika has been titled as one of Indonesia’s super priority destinations, Nurul Bilad Mosque seems like a complement to Mandalika pristine beaches and underwater vista.

If you are familiar with Lombok and a little bit of its culture already, then perhaps you already know that the concept of Nurul Bilad Mosque was adopted from the awe-inspiring Bayan Beleq Mosque. Though it is derived from the traditional, it will give you an impression of contemporary design.

Address: Kuta, Pujut, Central Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara 83573 (Check on Google Maps)

4. Gigantic Signature Blue Dome of Agung Praya Mosque

Another majestic holy home for the moslems in Lombok, Agung Praya is a mosque built in Praya — the capital town of Lombok Regency. Standing tall since the year 2000, Agung Praya Mosque can hold a max of 10 thousand people.

Due to its size, Agung Praya and its signature blue dome is one of the biggest mosques in West Nusa Tenggara. Historically speaking, Agung Praya has been there since 1979 — as a mushalla.

The massive blue dome that is seen right now is the result of renovation by the ex-Governor HM Suhaili. Mr. President himself once visited Agung Praya Mosque for a Friday prayer. Indeed, one of the beautiful mosques in Lombok worth visiting!

Address: Leneng, Praya, Central Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara 83511 (Check on Google Maps)

5. The Uniqueness of Al-Ridwan Mosque

A mosque with a signature Islamic architecture? You can almost find it anywhere, right? But not when we’re talking about the iconic Ridwan Mosque. Nestled on a not very steep hill in Malang Gorde, Pakuan Village, Al-Ridwan Mosque brings the concept of Chinese traditional architecture.

If you look from a distance, Al-Ridwan Mosque resembles a bright-red temple. The uniqueness of Al-Ridwan Mosque is making it not just a place for Moslems to pray, but an attractive religious attraction to the locals and even foreigners.

The mosque itself was designed by an architect from China that intentionally combined the Chinese culture with Islamic values. Al-Ridwan Mosque is indeed a symbol of diversity in Indonesia itself.

More than just its uniqueness, Al-Ridwan Mosque offers you a scenic panoramic view of Lombok’s gorgeous nature. Like that’s not enough, the one of a kind Al-Ridwan Mosque also offers you a sense of tranquility as it is located far away from the hustle and bustle.

Address: Dasan Opit Oya, Sakra Timur, Lepak, Selong, East Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara 83671 (Check on Google Maps)
