Surabaya Historic Sites – Every year, we celebrate the National Heroes Day on November 10. On that date, Indonesian citizens are paying tribute to heroes by flying a flag. This was done to honor the heroes who died in a major event that took place in Surabaya.

1. Tugu Pahlawan

One of the historical places in Surabaya is Tugu Pahlawan. This monument was built to honor the soldiers who died during a battle against the invaders who wanted to occupy the city on November 10, 1945. Tugu Pahlawan is located right in front of the Surabaya governor’s office, on Tembaan street.

In addition, this monument is built with a shape resembling a nail that is upside down with a height reaching 40.45 meters. The diameter of this monument is 3.1 meters at the bottom, and 1.3 meters at the top. 

As one of the historical places in Surabaya, the Tugu Pahlawan or Heroes Monument has become the center of attention on Nov. 10 every year.

2. Monument of Bambu Runcing

Bambu Runcing is a traditional weapon used by Indonesian soldiers on the battlefield to fight against the Dutch. At that time, the soldiers used a spear made of a sharpened bamboo to attack the opponent. The Monument of Bambu Runcing shows the struggle of national heroes in the colonial era.

Moreover, Monument of Bambu Runcing is located on Jalan Panglima Sudirman or at the heart of Surabaya. This monument consists of five pillars with different heights. There is a small garden around the monument with many different varieties of plants.

3. General Sudirman Monument

Furthermore, the third historical place in Surabaya is the General Sudirman Monument, which is located on Yos Sudarso street. There are many other important buildings around the monument such as Surabaya City Hall, New Garden Palace Hotel, Local Parliament Building of Surabaya and so on.

This monument is overlooking the Monument of Bambu Runcing. This historical place is also located close to the City Hall building, which is the office of the Mayor of Surabaya.

4. WR Soepratman Museum

Wage Rudolf Soepratman is one of Indonesia’s national heroes. In October 1928, there was a Youngster Congress. The congress had borne “Sumpah Pemuda”. On 28 October 1928, Seopratman performed his song in front of public participants. It was the first time Indonesia Raya song was performed in public. All of the participants were amazed after hearing the song and since then the song was always played at every congress held.

You can visit the WR Soepratman museum to commemorate his services. The museum is located on Jalan Tambaksari Surabaya. Inside the museum, you can see the original writing from WR Soepratman when he made Indonesian Raya songs and violin instruments accompanying him when creating national songs.

5. Submarine Monument

The Submarine Monument or also called Monkasel is one of a popular historical place in Surabaya. This monument was made from Pasopati 410 KRI submarine which was one of the Indonesian Navy fleets. The submarine was made by the Soviet Union in 1952 and was once involved in the Battle of Aru Samudera to free West Papua from Dutch population.

The submarine was brought to the land to be made into a monument to commemorate the courage of Indonesian heroes. You can visit this monument located on Jalan Pemuda, next to the Surabaya Plaza.
