Take a Peek at the Charm of Batu Cermin Cave!
Batu Cermin Cave is a 19 hectare and 75 meters high cave situated in Wae Sambi, Labuan Bajo. It is named ‘batu cermin’ or ‘mirror stone’ because the walls can reflect the sunlight which gets in the cave, just like a mirror.

The discovery of this cave was done by a Dutch archaeologist, Theodore Verhoeven in 1951. He believes that the cave was formed a million of years ago and originally was situated under the sea, as it contains a lot of salt and has some ancient sea creature fossils inside.
What is more interesting is that you don’t need to have special skills, such as abseil caving to explore this cave, as the path along Batu Cermin Cave has been made relatively accessible for everyone. Yeay!
How to Get There
This cave is located in the heart of Labuan Bajo, and can be easily accessed by private car or motorcycle. From the Komodo International Airport, the journey even takes only 10-15 minutes, so visiting this destination straight away after you land in Labuan Bajo is a good idea.

Let’s Begin Our Journey Inside Batu Cermin Cave
Now let’s begin our journey inside Batu Cermin Cave. The distance from the parking area to the entrance of the cave is around 300 meters. To go inside, visitors must be accompanied by a tour guide who will show the way inside as well as explaining more about the history and the current condition of the cave.
Each tour usually lasts for a few hours and the maximum number of visitors in one group is 10 persons. This limitation is carried out to make sure that there will be enough space for everyone in the cave.
While waiting outside, you may encounter animals, such as monkeys and different types of birds in their real habitat. Don’t worry, t-mates! They are nice and won’t disturb you.

When it’s finally your turn to go inside, you will get a helmet that you should wear to protect your head. Besides that, you are also encouraged to turn on your flashlight as there is no additional light inside other than natural sunlight.
Inside the cave, you will get to see the beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, and some bats hanging on the cave walls. Then you will also find the fossils of sea creatures, such as coral reefs and sea turtles. No more reasons to not believe that this cave was originally underwater!

However, if any of you still didn’t believe that fact, here is a fun thing you can do. Try to scream inside the cave and see if your voice will echo or not.
Usually, your voice will be echoed when you’re talking in a cave, but not in Batu Cermin Cave. It is because this cave is full of coral reefs, which cannot produce any echoes. Dare to try?
Check Out These Things to Take Notes!
We can feel your excitement to be the cave explorer, t-mates! Before you begin your journey, here are things to take notes.
First of all, it is always a good idea to wear something comfortable and bring less stuff inside the cave. A combination of T-shirt, pants, trekking shoes and backpack to carry your stuff is totally perfect!

Then you also need to remember not to touch the stones or coral reefs inside the cave because they are still alive and growing. If they are touched by humans for too many times, they will lose their salt particles and stop growing. We are sure you don’t want this to happen, so let’s keep our hands to protect them!
