Melbourne International Art Festival 2019 Highlights

A spectacular live show is coming up in Melbourne this October! It is a combination of dance, theatre, visual arts and other types of arts that will make you amazed!

If you have a plan to visit Australia this October, find your way to Melbourne and spare your time to participate in Melbourne International Art Festival (MIAF)!

What is Melbourne International Art Festival (MIAF)?

MIAF is going to be held for 19 days in October. In this festival, you’ll get a chance to watch performances from local and international artists across different genres from theatre to visual arts.

The festival will open with a performance called Tanderrum. It is a ceremony with deep historical significance, which means performing together as One Kulin Nation. Tanderrum is the meeting of five Aboriginal clans which are Wurundjeri, Boon Wurrung, Taungurung, Wadawurrung and Dja Dja Wurrung. It is also known as a “welcome to the country” ritual.

Within the festival period, you can choose either to join the free events or the paid events. One of the examples of a free event that you can go to is Melbourne Art Trams. The event was inspired by the original Transporting Art Project in which from 1978-1993, popular local artists such as Mirka Mora, Howard Arkley, Reg Mombassa transformed the historic W-class trams with their art. This year, the Melbourne Art Trams artists are Lesley Dumbrell, Nyein Chan Aung, Kent Morris, among others.

MIAF also offers world-class performance. One of them is “Rite of Spring”, a performance by Yang Liping Contemporary Dance. The choreographer is known in China as the “Peacock Princess” for her work. Yang Liping is famous for the traditional peacock dance. The dance is influenced by Tibetan and Chinese symbols of nature as well as beliefs in the cyclicity of life and death.
