Hidden Beaches to Explore in Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta

1. Widodaren Beach

In Javanese language, “widodaren” means “angel” and this beach is truly the work of an angel. From the first step you take, you’ll be served with the sight of its clear, blue water and beautiful corals.

Surrounding the beach, you can see a 7 meters cliff that’s grown with grass, giving it a unique trait compared to the others. Although it’s made of corals that can be quite sharp, you can still reach the top of the cliff by taking the small stairs on the side.

From up here, you can enjoy the aerial view of the beach or have a picnic on the grassed part. If you do so, don’t forget to keep the area clean and don’t litter, okay?

2. Sedahan Beach

Want to see baby turtles getting out of their shells? Yes, because the beach is still pretty much untouched, at a certain time, it is possible to see newborn baby turtles at Sedahan Beach. Exciting, right?

With smooth-as-velvet sands, Sedahan Beach is actually sandwiched between two cliffs, which makes a killer background for your holiday photos. 

From up here, people usually fish or enjoy the sunset. But, if you’re more of a sunrise person, the people that manage Sedahan Beach also provide camping gears so you can stay overnight to watch the sunrise in the morning.

The only cons on the list is that you have to walk for at least 30 minutes to reach here. But trust us, it will be sooo worth it!

3. Kesirat Beach

Unlike the first two white sand beaches, Kesirat is a cliff beach that’s overgrown with grass and trees. So basically the beach is directly under this cliff. 

Because there’s no shore, the waves can hit the cliffs pretty strongly, so you have to be careful when standing near it. But, on the other hand, it creates a really calming sound that will help you relax.

Looking for another thing to do? Well, Kesirat Beach is also known as it spot for rock fishing. As the beach contacts directly with the sea, it’s possible to catch big ones. Of course, you can also see the beautiful sunset from up here. Even better, you can almost see the whole ocean, which makes it more captivating.

4. Jungwok Beach

Didn’t the name of this beach kinda make you think of Jungkook from BTS? No? Well, we can assure you that at least this beach is as charming as he is.

Located at the east side of Gunung Kidul, Jungwok Beach is known for its calm waves and green scenery. So people can get closer to the beach and play in the water or enjoy the view.

At the center of it, you can see a small, rock-like, island that you can use as the background of your selfies. What’s even greater is that most of the time, this beach is pretty much empty so you might feel like you’re in a private beach.

5. Wediombo Beach

Not far from Jungwok Beach, there is another hidden paradise called Wediombo Beach. According to the locals, this beach was originally a volcano that sank into the bottom of the ocean.

Wediombo Beach is stretched wide and long with a powder-like coastline. Then, if you walk for another 500 meters, there’s a lagoon which features flat corals that’s safe to step on. On rare occasions when there is high tide, the lagoon creates a mesmerizing mini waterfall.

Besides sightseeing, Wediombo Beach is also one of the best beaches in Gunung Kidul for surfing. So don’t forget to bring your gears and have fun!

6. Watu Lumbung Beach

Looking for the perfect beach for your pictures? Then Watu Lumbung Beach is the place for you. The main feature of this beach is the two big rocks that are often compared to the back of a dragon.

Looking up to the sky, you’ll get a striking view of clouds that looks almost as soft as a cotton candy. Even more so if you go here during sunset. The sight is out of this world!

If you’re planning on going to Watu Lumbung, make sure that you’ve prepared yourself for a hike. But don’t worry, because even on the way, your eyes will be spoiled with the views of rice fields and farms.

7. Jogan Beach

Last but not least, there’s Jogan Beach where you can see a waterfall flowing from the river onto the rocky shoreline. Sometimes, it’s hard to understand why not many people know about its existence, despite having a unique nature.

There are two ways to enjoy the stream of the waterfall below the cliff. The first way is to descend from the cliff by rappelling. Of course, there will be a guide and safety gears provided. The second way is to come down the steep slippery rock. But don’t worry, there is a wooden handle for you to grab during your walk.

Similar to Kesirat Beach, Jogan is also a cliff beach. But luckily, here you can still get pretty close to the water and play in it. Of course, the scenery is also amazing so it’s totally worth a shout-out on your Insta.
