What is Bo Sang Umbrella Festival?
Bo Sang Umbrella Festival is held every year in Chiang Mai, specifically at Bo Sang Umbrella village. During the three-day-long festival, festival-goers can see hundreds of colorful umbrellas with brilliant design. This event is very Instagrammable, so don’t forget to bring your camera!
The paper umbrellas were made from mulberry bark. Besides for decoration, paper umbrellas can also be used to protect from the rain. Basically, the three-days festival is held to celebrate the craftsmanship of the village.
This festival is special because there is also a popular highlight called Bo Sang Beauty Pagean Bike Parade. Thai women ride through the streets while holding a colorful umbrella. During the festival, there are also other things to see and do such as dancing performances and various foods to eat.

What to Expect during the Festival?
Local villagers use traditional Lanna attire to greet visitors on the first opening day. Usually, Chiang Mai governor begins with the opening ceremony.
Bo Sang Beauty Pageant
Thai ladies ride bicycles holding parasols, equipped with handcrafted bamboo baskets. Usually, there is a judging process. The contestants are judged based on their overall appearance.
Live Music and Cultural Performance
Starting at 7pm, there will be cultural performances and festivities.
Traditional Crafts Market and Artists Demonstration.
You can find many stores selling umbrellas, parasols, and other handicrafts. This is the place where you can buy some souvenirs for your relatives.
During the three days event, local artists come to the village to craft unique umbrellas. Tourists can also join the umbrella-making workshops for a small fee.
How to Get There?
Bo Sang festival is located at San Kampaeng district, 10 kilometers southeast of Chiang Mai.
There are a few ways to get there: by bus, by taxi or by car. Take a bus takes about 25 minutes. Alternatively, driving or taking a taxi from Chiang Mai to San Kampaeng takes about 20 minutes.
